Appearance Designer Kiosks and Armor Dyes in SWTOR

If you saw the latest insider video from Bioware, you might have caught your eye on the new appearance design kiosk and armor dyes they are adding to the game. This will be available in patch 2.1, titled Customization.

If you’ve been wanting more customization in SWTOR or are growing tired of your toon’s look, you’re in luck. The appearance design kiosk will give you the chance to change your hairstyle, hair color, eye color, scars and tattoos and even your species. If you’re character needs a makeover, the time is now!

It will cost cartel coins but there is also a permanent discount for subscribers so you can save 50% on all actions at the appearance designer kiosk if you sub. You can also choose features that you want and it works on a slider basis, meaning you don’t have to pay full price for a makeover if you’re only changing one thing, like your hair color.

Already there are complaints in the community about this costing Cartel Coins. I agree that it would be nice if it cost credits only but keep in mind that you get free monthly coins as a subscriber and also that as long as the cartel market is bringing in money, it keeps the game alive for BioWare to keep producing new content. So really, you’re giving back to the game and getting something you want while you’re at it.

Then there are also dye modules which allow you to mix and match pieces of armor or change an entire set of armor at the same time. You can get dye modules in primary only, secondary only or primary and secondary mixed, based on which colors of your gear you want to change. These dye modules will work with the current item enhancement and modding system.

Basically this means that to use them, you open the item modification menu for the gear you want to apply the dye to. They are consumable so you can only use them once. And that’s pretty much it- they’re pretty simple. Many items will be dyable but of course there are some restrictions. Items under L15 cannot be dyed and green items not from crafting usually cannot be dyed either.

All in all, it’s a pretty good addition to the game and we look forward to these customization options. What about you?
