Star Wars Holiday Special: A Masterpiece of Awkwardness and Cringe

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 television special that has gained notoriety among Star Wars fans for its low production value, bizarre storyline, and cringe-worthy musical performances. While the special has been largely panned by critics and fans alike, it remains a fascinating artifact of the Star Wars franchise and a glimpse into the creative choices and cultural trends of the late 1970s. The special was commissioned by CBS and aired on November 17, 1978, just over a year after the release of the first Star Wars film. The special was intended to capitalize on the success of the film and generate interest in the upcoming sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. However, the special was plagued by production problems from the start. The original script was rewritten multiple times, and the special’s director and writers had little experience with the Star Wars universe. The storyline of the special…

Do You Know the Cannabis Element in the Star War Universe?

Why are we talking about cannabis and Star Wars? Well, since cannabis has been legalized, much has been made of its appearance in films and on TV, and in other media. Of course, the Star Wars franchise – one of the most successful movie franchises in history – began long before cannabis was even close to being legalized, in 1977. That seems a lifetime ago now! Is there a reference to cannabis in Star Wars? That’s something that a surprising number of people have studied. The Star Wars universe is, of course, entirely fictional but give there are elements of modern life in there, one would expect drugs to feature somewhere – and indeed they do! Let’s have a closer look.  Is Cannabis Featured in Star Wars?  While there is no scene in which a Star Wars character is seen using a dab pen for weed concentrate or other vape…

Relax. Boba will survive, and he will almost certainly get another season

I’ll be fair, I’ve had my criticisms of this show (see my profile for an earlier post of what I wanted). Not everything was going to be executed properly, just because, unlike the Mandalorian, Boba has a history with the fanbase – and so creative liberty is stifled a bit. But I’ve seen some crazy theories about how Disney’s ruining the character and such. That’s just not true. They’re setting Boba up to transition from being a lone wolf into a leader. Something like how the Mandalorian had to go from a lone wolf to a father figure. So a couple points: Boba isn’t going to die. His visions obviously mean something that’s been unanswered so far in the show. The show writers have them in there for a reason. I feel like once we know that, we’ll know a lot more about where this is going. But if legends…

Star Wars Provides New Evidence For The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda Clone Theory

It’s more than apparent that the real star of The Mandalorian is The Child, or “baby Yoda”, as he has been dubbed by the public. The Child has a very integral role in the storyline of The Mandalorian when the main character is sent to retrieve him, but then becomes suspicious of what they plan to do with him. A new Star Wars book provides more evidence that the Empire was trying to clone Baby Yoda, which was hinted at in Season One of the show. A new, franchise companion guide, aptly titled The Star Wars Book, now lends even more credence to the “Baby Yoda” clone theory. The new Star Wars Book is just one of several hitting the shelves this month. (Another, Star Wars: Fascinating Facts, has already revealed franchise secrets.) The Star Wars Book, however, shares in-universe details. Of those is this line, “Rumors spread of Imperial attempts to create clones of unique species.” We…

Daisy Ridley Says Work was Scarce Right after Star Wars

As the star of a multi-billion dollar franchise, you’d think Daisy Ridley would have no trouble finding a job after filming the latest Star Wars trilogy. Surprisingly, she says she wasn’t swimming in job offers right after (and this was before Covid-19 put a halt on filming). In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly about her voice role in the time-loop video game Twelve Minutes, Ridley talked about her role as Rey in the Star Wars saga, and about how she wasn’t swimming in job offers right away. Roles like Ridley’s Rey are often career-defining jobs for actors. But it’s clear that Ridley also doesn’t want to get typecasted into only one type of role. She talks about it more in a virtual interview with the site. “Nothing was coming through,” the actress recalls of those first couple months after Rise of Skywalker hit theaters. “It was so sad to finish [Star Wars],” she says…

Reappraising ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’

All the hype that came with the original cinema release of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ seems like it was a long time ago now. It wasn’t, of course – it’s only been six months – but the world has changed so much since then that it might as well have happened in a different lifetime. When you cast your mind back, though, you’ll remember that everyone had very strong opinions about the film, just as they did with ‘The Last Jedi.’ Some people loved it. A lot of people hated it. If we went back and watched it again now, free of all the hype and expectations, would our opinions of it change?  The question is worth asking now, because now is the time to allow yourself a second viewing if you haven’t seen it for a while. On May 4th (the day that the world has happily adopted as…

‘Star Wars’ Series From ‘Russian Doll’ Co-Creator Leslye Headland in the Works at Disney Plus

In an exclusive interview with Variety, we found out that Disney had something new in the works – a new Star Wars series for Disney Plus from the co-creator of “Russian Doll”, Leslye Headland. I, for one, was a HUGE fan of Russian Doll (Hello? Where’s our Season 2?) and I think this could be a good matchup for the new Star Wars series that is said to be female-centric. The details of the show are being kept secret (of course) but it’s said to take place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline from other projects. If anyone can do a female-centric piece well with strong, likable, relatable female characters, it will be Headland. In addition to her work on “Russian Doll”, she also has writing and directing credits in “Seven Deadly Plays”, “About Last Night”, “Sleeping with Other People”, and “Black Monday” to name a few….

Top 10 Ranking of the Villains in the Star Wars Universe

From the original trilogy to the recently concluded sequels, the Star Wars franchise is filled with memorable villains.  Adorned by brutally minimalist outfits and armour, the bad guys enter with flair (often in a ship that’s flashier than a GClub game). Not all the Star Wars villains are created equal, though. Some are more sinister than others, so to celebrate the gloriousness that is the Star Wars universe, we’ve compiled the Top 10 rogue’s gallery of villains in the franchise. 10. Stormtroopers While they may not be the strongest or most accurate soldiers, stormtroopers are the most ubiquitous antagonists in the galaxy. Whether it’s combing the desert for our heroes or speeding through a dense jungle planet, they’re there to take a beating and make the heroes look good. 9. Greedo While he may only have seconds of screen time, Greedo played a big part in making Han Solo one…

The Cancelled STAR WARS Episode 9 Animated

Want a little laugh in your day? This Animated Episode 9 just made my whole day. It’s a lot of fun and will give you the breakdown of what would have been for the canceled Duel of Fates. Before JJ Abrams came on board for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Collin Trevorrow was slated to direct his own version, Duel Of The Fates. Unfortunately, that would never be. But, what would it have been like? Vastly different to the Episode 9 that we ended up with, it included no Emperor Palpatine, his Master Tor Vallum (using concepts from a cut character from the JJ version) more Rise Tico and General Leia, a double-sided lightsaber for Rey, Kylo Ren as the main protagonist and about the same amount of the Knights Of Ren we actually got. Here’s a great video from Mr Sunday Movies that will tell you all about…
