The Star Wars universe is set to expand in a bold new direction with the upcoming series “The Acolyte. This series, helmed by showrunner Leslye Headland of “Russian Doll” fame, is set to redefine Star Wars by delving into the franchise’s distant past during the final days of the High Republic era. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Headland, along with stars Amandla Stenberg of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Lee Jung-jae of “Squid Game”, shared insights into the series’ captivating mythology and performances.
The Acolyte” is set during a time of peace, when the Jedi are at the height of their power. This setting poses an intriguing challenge: what is Star Wars without war? This question led the creators to explore morally complex characters who operate outside the established Jedi order. As Headland puts it, “What should the show be about if it’s not going to be about galactic conflict?” The answer lies in following the future villains, those who are using the Force in their own way, dipping into the darker sides of the Force without the sanction of the larger institution, the Jedi.
Despite the absence of large-scale conflicts, fans can rest assured that action will still play a significant role in “The Acolyte. The series will feature battles with elaborate martial arts-themed choreography, redefining expectations of Star Wars combat scenes. Headland confidently stated, “I don’t think you’re going to see action in other shows the way that you see it utilized in our show.”
The characters played by Lee and Stenberg remain shrouded in mystery, but both actors expressed excitement about exploring the moral and ethical dilemmas their roles present. Stenberg, in particular, is thrilled about the opportunity to delve into these conflicts in the Disney+ series. At the same time, both actors couldn’t hide their excitement about being part of the Star Wars universe. Lee, speaking through a translator, exclaimed, “I can’t believe I’m playing a Jedi master and I get to use a lightsaber!
“The Acolyte’s” eight-episode first season is scheduled for release on Disney+ in 2024. Fans of the Star Wars universe have a lot to look forward to as the series promises to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise.
