Star Wars: Skeleton Crew – When and How to Watch the Thrilling New Disney+ Series

Is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Already a Flop? The Nielsen Ratings Say…Nothing

The galaxy far, far away might be expanding, but it seems some people didn’t get the memo. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, one of Lucasfilm’s most mysterious projects, has yet to make an impact in the Nielsen ratings, and the silence is deafening. With zero appearances on the streaming charts, it’s starting to look like this ship might have sailed before it even left the dock.

Where Are the Viewers?

According to Nielsen’s latest streaming ratings, Skeleton Crew is missing in action. Unlike The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, or even The Book of Boba Fett, which all had strong debuts (even if some later lost steam), this new entry into the Star Wars universe hasn’t made the rankings. That’s not a great sign for a series reportedly carrying a hefty budget and big names like Jude Law.

Disney and Lucasfilm have been tight-lipped about official numbers, which often means they don’t have good news to share. In contrast, when shows perform well (The Mandalorian being the prime example), the company is quick to flood the internet with victory laps.

As I’ve gone over, Disney+ automatically enables Nielsen tracking in user accounts, which is the industry standard for ratings. Samba TV also hasn’t once reported on the numbers, again, which I am guessing is at the request of Disney because the ratings are so bad, as Disney is an investor in Samba TV.

So, what’s going on? Did Skeleton Crew just fly under the radar, or is this another case of Star Wars fatigue finally catching up?

What Are the Ratings?

Coming in at #10, the bottom of the Nielsen charts for the week Episode 8 of Skeleton Crew was released is Apple TV’s Silo with 396 million minutes. As Skeleton Crew is missing from the chart, the final episode is obviously less than 396 million minutes.

Nielsen also measures ALL the episodes viewed within a given week’s timeframe, so again, that means no one binge-watched Skeleton Crew with all the episodes released.

For comparison, the last episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 was watched for 1336 million minutes (1.336 billion minutes!) — and that is with half as much time measured. That means more than 70% of fans have stopped watching Star Wars on Disney+!

Did Star Wars Burn Out Its Own Audience?

There was a time when a new Star Wars project would dominate pop culture conversations. That time… might be over. With Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, Visions, and now Skeleton Crew all hitting Disney+ in quick succession, it’s fair to ask: are audiences overwhelmed?

It’s not just about quantity—it’s about quality, too. While Andor received critical acclaim, other projects have been met with mixed reactions. The Book of Boba Fett spent half its season focusing on a completely different character, Ahsoka leaned heavily on animated series lore, and Obi-Wan Kenobi suffered from inconsistent writing.

If Skeleton Crew isn’t bringing anything fresh to the table, why would viewers tune in? And, more importantly, why would they stick around?

Marketing: The Missing Hyperdrive

Another major issue could be that Skeleton Crew simply hasn’t been marketed well. Disney’s handling of Star Wars promotion has been hit or miss, and this show in particular seems to have flown completely under the radar. Compare this to how Netflix hypes up its major releases or even how Disney promoted The Mandalorian in its early days—it’s like night and day.

Trailers, teasers, interviews, and social media buzz are crucial for getting a show off the ground. If Skeleton Crew isn’t getting that push, it’s no wonder it’s struggling to make an impact.

What’s Next for Star Wars?

Disney+

For Disney+, Andor Season 2 gets released on April 22, 2025, which ends the series. Likewise, Ahsoka Season 2 is also in the works, but that is now thought to be getting canceled after its second season. Disney also hasn’t announced any new live-action Star Wars TV shows for Disney+. The Mandalorian also looks to be done as Season 4 has apparently been scrapped in favor of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie.

Movies

On the big screen, all that is confirmed is The Mandalorian & Grogu out on May 22, 2026. While the new Daisy Ridley Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie is said to be happening, it’s on its fourth writer and has no release date. The other Star Wars movies also have no release dates, which is said to include the James Mangold origins of The Force flick and the new Simon Kinberg trilogy.

Kathleen Kennedy’s Graceful Exit Coming Soon?

Interestingly enough, a Lucasfilm exec behind The Acolyte has exited Lucasfilm and has been replaced by one of Kinberg’s crew, Derek Hoffman, who is now the new VP of Development at Lucasfilm. I’m guessing Kathleen Kennedy will make a “graceful exit” in 2026 when Bob Iger leaves Disney. Maybe Kinberg will take over.

Final Thoughts: The Force Is Weak With This One

If Skeleton Crew was supposed to usher in a new era of Star Wars storytelling, it might have just tripped over its own starship ramp. A combination of franchise fatigue, lackluster marketing, and unclear storytelling direction may have doomed it before it even had a chance to soar.

That doesn’t mean Star Wars is finished on streaming—it just means Lucasfilm needs to reassess its strategy. Maybe the best way forward isn’t more content, but better content. For now, though, Skeleton Crew seems stuck in hyperspace, waiting for a miracle (or maybe just some viewers).
