Four SWTOR characters walk side-by-side through a futuristic corridor in full gear

SWTOR 7.7.1 Dev Stream Analysis – Flashpoints, FOMO, and Finally Some Progress

If you’ve been wondering what’s next for Star Wars: The Old Republic—and you’ve been quietly pacing like a Sith Lord waiting for story content—you’re not alone. BioWare dropped the full 7.7.1 Dev Stream, and we’ve got thoughts.

Let’s break it down the way we always do: sharp, honest, and with just a little snark.

Story Content: We Wait… Again

Let’s rip off the band-aid first.

The big headline? No new story content in 7.7.1. Instead, the real narrative meat—Galactic Threads and Master’s Enigma—is pushed to Update 7.8 (Holiday 2025) and 7.8.1 (Spring 2026). That means we’ll hit 18 months without a single story chapter.

Yes, the voice actor strike played a role. But even with that resolved, BioWare’s chosen not to rush out a “catch-up” patch. Instead, we’re getting a slow drip. That’s fine if you’re patient… or already in carbonite.

The takeaway: If you were hoping to see the continuation of Lane Vizla’s arc, the Master’s mystery, or more Malgus… you’ll need to wait. Again.

Galactic Season 9 – Flashpoint Resurgence

We’re entering a Flashpoint-focused season, which feels like a natural progression after Season 8’s Uprising focus. Kai Zykken’s back and once again asking you to do questionable experiments for loot. This time: Czerka Combat Enhancers, because what could go wrong?

  • Experimental Repulsor Field lets you yeet enemies into each other.
  • Projectile Probes follow you around like angry pet drones that shoot on sight.

The rewards? Stacked.

  • Multiple Verdier and Minas mounts
  • Stronghold labels like “Inner Sanctum”
  • A new T7-01 Rugged Customization as the Meta reward
  • And a ton of Andor-inspired flavor in the armor sets and visuals

If you’ve got a farming itch, this season will scratch it.

QoL & Activity Finder Improvements

7.7.1 delivers a quiet revolution here.

  • You can now queue for multiple roles at once, across both Combat Styles.
  • You can change your role mid-queue and see what you’re slotted for before the group launches.
  • A dedicated Flashpoint Resurgence queue matches your Galactic Season objectives.

But the cherry on top? Cutscene skipping in Veteran and Master Flashpoints. No more “spacebar fever.” Instead, you’ll get fade-to-black transitions and automatic Light/Dark choices. It’s clean, it’s efficient, and yes, it’s a little soulless—but it makes grinding a breeze.

And for sub-75 players, boss drops now go from one to two to four pieces. That’s not just loot inflation—it’s a real win for leveling alts.

Class Changes & Combat Balancing

They’re still combing through the trees—and not the ones on Endor.

Update 7.7.1 includes targeted tweaks for:

  • Mercenary / Commando
  • Operative / Scoundrel
  • Sorcerer / Sage

Plus some direct numbers:

  • Assassin / Shadow: Force Speed cooldown reduced by 7 seconds (Level 73).
  • Operative / Scoundrel: Exfiltrate/Scamper cooldown down to 7 seconds (Level 60).

These aren’t massive overhauls, but they do smooth out some annoying edges—especially in PvP or Galactic Season farming.

F2P & Preferred Perks Just Got Better

Free and Preferred players have had it rough for years. But 7.7.1 actually throws them a real bone:

  • Companion customizations unlocked
  • Rest XP granted
  • Legacy titles usable
  • Hide Head slot, first Cargo Bay, and all quickbars now accessible
  • Artifact Authorization not required for gear under level 80

Also, Security Key users now only receive Cartel Coins if they’ve logged in within the last 29 days. That’s fair—but don’t forget to log in or you’ll lose that passive income.

Character Visuals & Select Screen Polish

The character select screen got a full lighting and DoF makeover, and we’re here for it.

Even better, BioWare updated Rattataki faces, fixed some Dark Side corruption bugs, and unlocked hundreds of new hair and montral color combos across species. Chiss, Cathar, Togruta, Mirialan, Cyborg—you name it, they’re glowin’ up.

No new species (yet), but this is still one of the best “feel good” updates for RP and customization lovers in years.

Tech Leap: DirectX 12 Progress

Big tech update—SWTOR now runs internally on DirectX 12.

It’s not available to players yet, but the devs confirmed they’re:

  • Porting UI tech
  • Implementing baseline shaders
  • Preparing a Technical Alpha for PTS

This might finally be the leap we need for performance and graphic fidelity. Fingers crossed.

What’s Missing?

  • No new Date Night content yet—those are now targeting 7.8.1, with Kira and Torian getting the spotlight.
  • No major expansion teasers, new companions, or flashpoints.
  • Still no word on Malgus, which honestly feels like narrative malpractice at this point.

Final Verdict

Game Update 7.7.1 is a surprisingly meaty patch without story content. It delivers valuable QoL changes, a well-themed Galactic Season, and some meaningful modernization—both in visuals and tech. If you’re playing for systems, fashion, and rewards, this is a great moment to jump back in.

But if you’re here for the plot?
You’ll need to keep waiting. And waiting. And waiting.
