Tony Gilroy and Dave Filoni together as Andor creator addresses rumors of tension with Star Wars creative team

Tony Gilroy Shuts Down Rumors of Tension Between Him and Dave Filoni Over Andor

Star Wars fans love a good behind-the-scenes drama almost as much as a lightsaber duel—but according to Andor creator Tony Gilroy, the rumored friction between him and Lucasfilm creative chief Dave Filoni simply doesn’t exist.

In a new interview, Gilroy addressed speculation that Filoni may have disliked Andor or had creative disagreements with the team behind the critically acclaimed series. His response? A very clear and repeated no.

“No. We’ve only met a couple times, and we’ve only had a half-a-dozen conversations over the last ten years… We’ve always gotten along with those guys, and we’ve never had anything but high praise for everything that they’ve done.”

Gilroy went on to emphasize that the success of modern Star Wars Disney+ content—particularly The Mandalorian—is the very reason Andor was able to exist in the first place.

“We only have our show because of them, and we’ve always said that was true. There’s no Andor without The Mandalorian. It would not exist.”

No Drama Behind the Scenes

Despite ongoing online speculation about creative divides within Lucasfilm, Gilroy made it clear that relations between teams working on different Star Wars projects have remained respectful and positive.

He also stressed that any rumors of conflict are unfounded and not based on real interactions between him and Filoni.

“It has never been anything but cordial and pleasant, ever, ever, ever, ever. I don’t know anything that you don’t know. I really don’t.”

For fans, this confirmation reinforces what many suspected: while Andor and Filoni’s projects like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Clone Wars differ in tone and storytelling style, they’re all part of the same collaborative Star Wars ecosystem.

A Shared Galaxy, Different Styles

Andor has often been praised for its grounded tone, political storytelling, and mature themes, while Filoni’s work tends to lean more into mythic Force lore and animated-inspired storytelling. The contrast led some fans to assume creative tension behind the scenes.

Gilroy’s comments put those theories to rest.

Instead of rivalry, it sounds like mutual respect—and a shared understanding that modern Star Wars thrives because of its range. Without the success of The Mandalorian proving that Disney+ Star Wars series could work, Andor might never have been greenlit.

The Bigger Picture for Star Wars

As Lucasfilm continues expanding across films, streaming, animation, and games, collaboration between creators remains key. Gilroy’s remarks highlight that even when projects feel wildly different in tone, they’re still building the same galaxy together.

For fans worried about internal Lucasfilm divisions, this is about as reassuring as it gets.

The Force—and apparently the working relationships—remain balanced behind the scenes.
