Mandalorian and Grogu IMAX event poster sold out

The Mandalorian & Grogu May the 4th IMAX Previews Have Already Sold Out

That did not take long.

The special-look IMAX fan events for The Mandalorian & Grogu on May the 4th are now officially sold out, according to Star Wars’ own social posts announcing the sellout. The events were set up as free advance screenings at select IMAX theaters around the world, giving fans an early look at more than 25 minutes of footage from the movie ahead of its full theatrical release.

And honestly, that is a pretty strong signal.

Fans moved fast on this one

Lucasfilm and IMAX only just started pushing the event publicly, with trade coverage confirming that the May 4 screenings would include more than 25 minutes of exclusive footage, special fan giveaways, and a new poster at select locations. Boxoffice Pro reported the event on April 23, framing it as a global May the 4th fan push tied directly to the movie’s theatrical rollout.

Now the RSVP spots are gone.

That means what sounded like a clever promo has immediately turned into a sold-out one, which is exactly the kind of headline Lucasfilm probably wanted heading into May. A free IMAX preview was always likely to move quickly, but a full sellout still gives The Mandalorian & Grogu a nice little momentum story before release. The sellout itself is confirmed; the read on what it means for hype is an inference.

This was a bigger tease than usual

Part of the appeal here is that Lucasfilm was not just offering a trailer on a giant screen.

The Fandango event page says fans would get to preview more than 25 minutes of never-before-seen footage at the May the 4th IMAX Special Look event, which is a lot more substantial than the usual “exclusive sneak peek” language studios love to stretch into meaninglessness.

That bigger footage chunk is probably why the event disappeared so quickly.

Studios do not normally hand out that much of a movie unless they think the opening can sell itself. So while this is obviously a fan-service play, it also looks like a confidence play. That part is interpretation, but it lines up with the scale of the preview and the speed of the sellout.

A good sign before the full release

The Mandalorian & Grogu opens in theaters on May 22, 2026, and recent coverage has made it very clear that Lucasfilm wants this to feel like a real big-screen event, not just a Disney+ spinout with a larger budget. The movie has been heavily positioned around IMAX, premium format spectacle, and theatrical scale.

So yes, a sold-out May the 4th preview is a small story.

But it is also the kind of small story that helps build the bigger one.

Because if fans are this quick to lock in a 25-minute special look, Lucasfilm has every reason to keep selling The Mandalorian & Grogu as one of the franchise’s most important theatrical swings in years.
