SWTOR’s 8.0 Era Is Starting to Take Shape After Legacy Reborn

SWTOR has finally turned the page on Legacy of the Sith, and now we’re getting the first real hints of what comes next.

In the latest Executive Producer Letter for Q2 2026, Keith Kanneg confirmed that Broadsword is now “fully focused” on developing content for Game Update 8.0, with the first Public Test Server phase planned to begin in the coming weeks. That first PTS phase will include the opening boss of the new Operation, plus level 85 testing for select Classes, including Sentinel, Vanguard, Sage, and their Imperial mirrors.

That is the important bit.

Not because “PTS soon” is the flashiest sentence ever written. It isn’t. But because SWTOR has now moved out of the long, messy shadow of Legacy of the Sith and into the build-up for its 15th anniversary update.

Legacy of the Sith Is Finally Done

The letter looks back at the recent run of story updates that closed out Legacy of the Sith: Game Update 7.8 “Pursuit of Ruin”, 7.8.1 “Master’s Enigma”, and June’s 7.9 “Legacy Reborn.” Broadsword describes Legacy Reborn as the finale to Legacy of the Sith, with the siege of Naga Sadow’s Hidden Fortress on Khar Shian bringing several long-running story threads together.

That matters because Legacy of the Sith has been a strange chapter for the game.

It had big ideas. Darth Malgus. Mandalorian fallout. Sith mysteries. Khar Shian. Darth Nul’s lingering shadow. Shae Vizla getting dragged deeper into the mess. But it also took a long time to get where it was going, and players have spent years waiting for the story to stop circling the landing pad and actually dock.

Now it has.

Maybe not with every answer neatly wrapped in a bow, because this is SWTOR and apparently nobody is allowed to leave a room without another ominous thread trailing behind them. But Legacy Reborn gives the game a proper stopping point before 8.0 starts pulling attention.

That alone is useful.

The 8.0 PTS Is the Real Signal

The biggest news here is not the recap. It is the 8.0 PTS plan.

Broadsword says the first PTS phase is being prepared now and will kick off in the coming weeks. The team expects a months-long PTS cycle to gather feedback on the new features arriving with Game Update 8.0. A closer look is planned for the next developer stream, which is also “coming up soon.”

That is a smart move, and frankly, it needs to be.

A 15-year anniversary update cannot feel like a normal maintenance lap. SWTOR does not need to pretend it is suddenly a brand-new MMO again, but 8.0 has to feel like more than a number on a patch note. Raising the level cap to 85, testing a new Operation, and putting content in front of players early is the right first step.

The new Operation boss being part of the first PTS phase is especially worth watching. Operations have always been one of the areas where SWTOR can still flex when it wants to. Story keeps people emotionally invested, sure, but group content gives the endgame crowd something to actually chew on besides another reputation grind and whatever crime your inventory has become.

July Is Still Busy Before 8.0

The letter also points to several live-game items happening right now.

Nar Shaddaa Nightlife has returned with two new decorations, PvP Season 10 “Honor in Battle” is still underway with armor, decorations, and flairs, and Galactic Season 10 “Secrets of the Syndicate” is nearing its end later in July. Broadsword also teased the next Galactic Season, Season 11 “Light and Shadow.”

So yes, the usual SWTOR calendar machine is still running.

Nightlife is back for the gamblers. PvP Season 10 is still dangling rewards for people with stronger nerves than me. Galactic Season 10 is nearly done, which means the classic MMO panic of “I should probably finish that before it disappears” is now officially active.

We recently covered SWTOR’s July event schedule, including Relics of the Gree and Pirate Incursion, so the month is not exactly empty even before the 8.0 testing window starts.

SWTOR Needs 8.0 to Land Cleanly

The mood around SWTOR right now is pretty simple: the story chapter is closed, the anniversary update is coming, and players need to see what 8.0 actually is.

The Executive Producer Letter does not answer everything. It does not reveal the full feature list. It does not show the new Operation in detail. It does not give a release date.

But it does confirm the direction.

Legacy of the Sith is done. 8.0 is now the focus. PTS is close. Level 85 is on the way. A new Operation is entering testing.

After years of buildup, delays, fragments, and “more later” energy, that is at least something solid to stand on.

Now Broadsword has to show the update can carry the weight of a 15-year milestone without collapsing into another long wait in a fancy jacket.
