SWTOR 8.0 Is Now Playable on the Public Test Server

The first playable slice of Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 8.0 is now available on the Public Test Server.

Subscribers can test the opening boss from the new Children of Nul Operation, several level 85 class changes, and a group of quality-of-life improvements before the update reaches the live game.

It is an early test phase rather than the complete update, but it gives players their first practical look at what SWTOR 8.0 is changing.

The First Children of Nul Boss Is Ready

The headline feature is the first boss from the upcoming Children of Nul Operation.

The encounter is currently available in Story and Veteran modes, while harder content will presumably arrive in a later phase. Players must create a fresh level 1 character on the PTS and use the supplied experience and equipment vendors to prepare for the level 85 encounter.

That setup removes the need to manually level another character simply to test one boss.

It also prevents players from spending several hours reorganising an ancient inventory before remembering why they logged in.

Six Combat Styles Are Being Rebalanced

This phase includes level 85 balance testing for:

  • Sentinel and Marauder
  • Sage and Sorcerer
  • Vanguard and Powertech

Each of these combat styles receives new abilities or passives at level 83.

These changes will need proper testing rather than quick target-dummy conclusions. New passives can affect rotations, resource management, defensive options, and the value of existing ability choices.

Players using these classes should therefore pay attention to both combat performance and whether the new additions actually make the classes more enjoyable.

A mathematically perfect rotation is less impressive when it feels like entering a tax return during a boss fight.

Fitted Items Are Finally Joining Collections

The test also includes three practical quality-of-life features.

Fitted Items in Collections should make it easier to access appearances that currently occupy an awkward corner of SWTOR’s cosmetic system.

Toys are being converted into abilities, moving them away from regular inventory items.

Decoration Persistence allows Stronghold decorations with active states to remember those settings after the player leaves.

None of these additions will dominate an expansion trailer, but they address the sort of everyday friction that players encounter repeatedly.

And after more than a decade, SWTOR contains enough small objects, currencies, toys, armour pieces, decorations, and mysterious inventory relics to qualify as its own archaeological period.

Only Subscribers Can Join This Test

The current SWTOR 8.0 PTS phase is available to subscribers.

Broadsword is directing testers to dedicated forum threads where they can answer focused questions and report issues with the Operation, class changes, and quality-of-life features. Players unfamiliar with the PTS can install it through either the SWTOR launcher or Steam.

This is only the beginning of Update 8.0 testing.

Future phases are expected to cover more of the update, including its new difficulty options and solo Venture systems. We have already examined why SWTOR 8.0’s open-world difficulty modes could make older planets dangerous again.

A Small but Useful First Look at Update 8.0

The first phase is relatively focused.

There is one Operation boss, six combat styles, and three quality-of-life systems to test. That may sound modest, but smaller test phases give players a better chance of identifying specific problems before more content is layered on top.

For current subscribers, this is the first opportunity to influence how SWTOR 8.0 feels before release.

For everyone else, it is the beginning of the long and sacred MMO tradition of watching other players discover which new ability is accidentally doing twelve times the intended damage.
