The Grit And Gore Of ‘KOTOR’ Shows How Star Wars Games Should Be Made

We love KOTOR and we’ve made that pretty clear in our posts over the years. KOTOR has seemed to take on a life of its own in the fandom that grew around it. And you just don’t see that anymore today. The Star Wars games that are being made aren’t hitting those same tones and creating the same feelings in the fans. What was it that made KOTOR so special? Sara Elsam has written a really great piece for LAD Bible that basically expresses everything I feel about KOTOR, and how it shows us the model for what Star Wars games should be like today. They basically say everything I would say already, so rather than repeat, here’s a snippet from Sara: “And in Knights of the Old Republic, you get to pick your destiny. You can be bad – like, really bad. Sith bad. Want to force someone to kill their best…

Tales of the Jedi Inspires SWTOR

How Star Wars: The Old Republic owes it all to Tales Of The Jedi, from double lightsabers to Sith Lords, Korriban, and the family tree of Bastilla and Satele Shan – James Hoare of Sci Fi Now tells us about Tales of the Jedi and how the Dark Horse Comics had an impact on SWTOR as we know it today. They have a great interview to help pay homage to the origin of SWTOR as we know it today. The idea behind Tales of the Jedi was really a new concept. It branched out from the views and storyline of the original Trilogy and did something new and bold. “18 years later, to celebrate the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic – which like Bioware’s Knights Of The Old Republic before it owes Tales Of The Jedi a tremendous debt – we got in touch with Veitch to find…

Knights Of The Old Republic And Another Voice-Acting Win

If you’re not familiar with one of the most popular Star Wars games of all time, you may not know that Knights of the Old Republic, fondly known as KOTOR, was very well-known for its voice-acting. Here’s something you might not have known: IL HK-47 was not written to be a comedic character. So, if you’ve played the game, you might be going “what?” right now. Kotaku has a piece that explains how this happened. It’s from the Boss Fight Books series, written by journalist Alex Kane. Here’s the full story on how he became a funny character: Darragh O’Farrell was the go-to voice-over (VO) director for Star Wars video game projects, in the LucasArts era and beyond. It was O’Farrell who had the idea to do the full voice-acted recording for the whole game. “It was one of the most ambitious projects that LucasArts or BioWare had ever attempted,”…

Obsidian’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3

Knights of the Old Republic, KOTOR, is one of the most popular Star Wars games to date. Fans of the series have been waiting for a KOTOR 3 that sadly, will never be. Once KOTOR 2 was wrapped up, Obsidian was all set to make a third game in the franchise, but it never came to pass. Speaking to Chris Avellone at Reboot Develop, Kirk McKeand from vg247.com asked if Obsidian ever had a story planned for Knights of The Old Republic 3, and it did. Here’s the basic premise, in Avellone’s words: “When we finished the second one we were all trying to restore our lives back to sanity,” Avellone remembers. “We did start working on the third game pitch, because we always imagined the trilogy. Even when working on the second game, we [tried] to foreshadow what Darth Revan was doing in the second game, and he wasn’t…

Knights Of The Old Republic Is STILL The Best Star Wars Game

Are you a fellow fan of Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR)? If you’ve been around our blog for a while, you know that we have regularly posted about this game and I’ve said myself how it is one of the best, if not THE best Star Wars game to date. Well, I’m not alone in this opinion. The Star Wars franchise is not putting out as many games these days as they once were, and there is a higher quality demand being placed on the games that do come out. But how do they measure up against a classic like KOTOR? This is a question that ScreenRant takes head-on in this piece that says KOTOR is STILL the best Star Wars game. The author, Derek Stauffer says: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the first Star Wars stories of its kind. It ignored all mention of the Skywalker family…

Bastila Shan: A Star Wars Story

Here’s another great Star Wars Story video from The Scoundrel’s Cantina. I’m a huge fan of Bastila Shan so I was actually really excited to see what they were going to do with this one. It was a pleasant watch, like all of their Star Wars Story videos. It’s about five minutes long, so really a short watch but they pack a lot of info in that five minutes. Grab a snack and give it a watch! Not familiar with Bastila? Bastila Shan was a Human female who served as a Jedi Padawan during the Jedi Civil War. Born on the planet Talravin to Helena Shan and a treasure hunter, her mother gave her up to the Jedi Order, believing that their lifestyle of travel and exertions was not suitable for her daughter. KOTOR 1 vs KOTOR 2

KOTOR 1 or KOTOR 2: which is better? This is no easy question to answer, since both have developed very loyal followings. YouTuber nerdSlayer has attempted to answer this question in his video, simply titled “KOTOR 1 vs KOTOR 2.” He breaks down his analysis along the lines of four different criteria: graphics (how the games look), ambience (the feel and immersion of the game), story (strength of the plot and the characters), and gameplay (the mechanics of how the game works). In terms of graphics, nerdSlayer considers how KOTOR 1 ( Download it free with Amazon Underground here) for  has a neutral color scheme. The planets all have a different look but no scenes are overbearing to the eye. KOTOR 2 is much darker by comparison and its colors are muted. That same darkness present in KOTOR 2 heavily influences its ambience, which is all around darker. KOTOR 1…

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Netflix TV Series Movement

What’s better than Star Wars on Netflix? What about The Old Republic era Star Wars on Netflix ? If you’re thinking that’s as awesome as we are, then you will want to watch this video because there’s a chance it might be happening. There’s a petition going around (find it here) and see why over 100,000 other people have already signed up to make this happen. From the petition: “Why Netflix was chosen was because of the wealth of great content they have produced over the years, such as Narcos, House of Cards, and especially everything that Marvel has done and is still currently working on.  Not only that, but Netflix can serve as a platform to tell these stories as they were meant to be portrayed: dark, foreboding, and a touch on the mature side.  This can also give us fans our healthy dose of Star Wars while we’re waiting on the new…

What about Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 3?

Here is a great video from GVMERS, you don’t see videos of this quality scale about a specific game often, especially for games as old as Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t think we’ll get Kotor 3, but we will likely get a game (or series hopefully) that is a spiritual successor/love letter to fans, and that is very similar to Kotor, perhaps still in the Old Republic era, or a different one. Thanks for joining us on another episode of GVMERS. Today we’ll be taking a look at the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series of role-playing games from LucasArts. While the first two RPGs in the acclaimed franchise provided memorable, dynamic storylines for players to enjoy, LucasArts canned the third single-player release in favor of other projects. Since then, BioWare’s massively multiplayer online spin-off “The Old Republic” seems to have eclipsed the Knights of the Old…

If you have not seen it already, here is the first ever gameplay footage of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Unreal Engine 4 remake by Apeiron. One thing I really like that he also points out in the video is that it’s from a first person view. I love first person in games like this and I’m very glad they went in that direction with it. They did say it will also be 3rd person so for those who don’t like the first-person view, you’re good too.  They do a great job at staying true to the original and it looks like a solid game so far, while of course it’s still in a very alpha development stage. I think from the looks of this very first gameplay footage, it looks very promising. Upper City Taris and Tatooine look great. In the footage, you can even see the…

It took me a while, but here’s what I found out. The Best: Knights of the Old Republic It’s getting old now, but this game has translated remarkably well to mobile platforms.
