WoW Number One Due to Lack of Competition

For the past seven years, World of Warcraft has ruled the MMORPG scene. I know as I have played off and on since beta. I took “WoW breaks” and it seemed I would return again and again when I grew bored of whatever MMO I was playing at the time. It’s a great game despite what some haters will say but even I, a longtime fan, grew bored of it. I wanted something new, something different, something more… but I still loved many of the things that made WoW so great.

Some people believe that WoW has survived for so long because it has not had any real competition. Although I love many things about the game, I have to agree on this. I’ve tried many other MMOs, including nearly every free-to-play MMORPG I could find to download to my computer and none of them had the total package that WoW had.

But will that continue to be true? Industry Gamers says Rift is the most serious competitor WoW has ever had. Trion Worlds boss Lars Buttler talks to the Industry Gamers team about Rift, how it competes with WoW and why he’s not worried about SWTOR joining the scene, either.

“”I think it actually creates a perfect storm of energy in our space that will catalyze the shift to online and multi-player even more. And Rift is such a great game and it’s so live and it will continue this speed of innovation that we don’t think anybody will be able to match,” Buttler boasted of Rift when asked about SWTOR.

So he doesn’t seem worried about SWTOR at all in terms of battling it out for the best new game to beat WoW. What do you think?
