Star Wars Detours unreleased episodes featuring Darth Vader parody and Emperor Palpatine

39 Finished Star Wars Episodes Were Never Released — And Probably Never Will Be

One of the strangest lost chapters in Star Wars history just resurfaced.

More than 39 fully completed episodes of the animated series Star Wars: Detours were finished years ago — but never released. And according to creator Seth Green, fans shouldn’t expect them to appear anytime soon.

Yes, an entire Star Wars show exists.
Fully produced.
Ready to go.
And still locked away.

A Complete Star Wars Series That Never Aired

Before Disney reset the direction of Star Wars in the early 2010s, Lucasfilm was working on a very different animated project.

Star Wars: Detours was a comedic series created by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich (Robot Chicken) and developed alongside George Lucas. It was designed as a lighthearted, parody-style look at the galaxy far, far away.

But this wasn’t just a concept that never got off the ground.

According to Green, over 39 episodes were fully completed before the show was shelved.

That means there’s essentially an entire unreleased Star Wars series sitting in the vault.

Why Disney Never Released It

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the company began reshaping Star Wars into a tightly connected canon across films, series, games, and books.

A non-canon comedy series didn’t fit that strategy.

So Detours was paused — and eventually shelved completely.

Now, years later, Seth Green says releasing it would require additional work. The episodes would need editing updates, technical upgrades, and additional investment to meet modern streaming standards.

And according to him, the decision comes down to simple economics:
there isn’t a clear financial upside strong enough to justify the cost.

A Lost Piece of Star Wars History

What makes Detours so fascinating isn’t just that it was cancelled — it’s that it was essentially finished.

Very few major franchises have an entire completed series sitting unreleased. Even fewer in a franchise as tightly managed as Star Wars.

The show reportedly leaned heavily into humor, parody, and exaggerated takes on classic characters, offering something closer to Robot Chicken than The Clone Wars. That tonal difference alone may make it harder to integrate into Disney’s current Star Wars ecosystem.

Still, the idea that dozens of finished episodes exist continues to fuel curiosity among longtime fans.

Could Star Wars: Detours Ever Be Released?

Never say never — especially in Star Wars.

Streaming platforms constantly look for exclusive content, anniversary specials, or “vault” releases that generate buzz. And few things would spark more curiosity than a long-lost Star Wars series suddenly appearing online.

But for now, Seth Green’s comments suggest Detours remains exactly where it has been for years:

Finished.
Stored away.
And unlikely to be released anytime soon.

For Star Wars fans, that makes it one of the biggest unseen projects in the franchise’s history.
