Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver “Frustrated” After Disney Scraps The Hunt for Ben Solo

A surprising new chapter in the ongoing Star Wars saga behind the scenes has come to light, and it involves a project many fans didn’t even know existed: The Hunt for Ben Solo.

According to recent interviews with director Steven Soderbergh, the unmade film spent years in development before Disney ultimately decided to pull the plug — leaving the creative team disappointed and fans wondering what could have been.

Two and a Half Years of Work — For Nothing

Speaking during a Brooklyn film series interview, Soderbergh revealed that he, Adam Driver, and writer Rebecca Blunt spent years developing the project, only to see it quietly cancelled.

“That was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam and Rebecca Blunt…The stated reason [from Disney] was, ‘We don’t think Ben Solo could be alive.’ And that was all we were told. And so there’s nothing to do about it, you know, except move on.”

The director made it clear that the decision came down to a single narrative concern: whether Ben Solo could realistically still be alive after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Despite what sounds like extensive development — including story work and a finished concept — the project never advanced beyond that stage.

A Film That Only Exists in Their Heads

Soderbergh also admitted that the cancellation hit harder than expected because he had already envisioned the entire movie.

“I’d kind of made the movie in my head, and just felt bad that nobody else was going to get to see it… We’re all very disappointed.”

That sentiment appears to be shared across the creative team.
Adam Driver had reportedly been deeply involved in shaping the story and was interested in exploring what happened to Ben Solo after his apparent sacrifice at the end of Episode IX.

While Lucasfilm itself was said to be open to the idea during development, Disney leadership ultimately chose not to move forward.

Could the Project Return One Day?

Even though The Hunt for Ben Solo is currently shelved, industry chatter suggests it may not be gone forever.

Recent speculation indicates that Lucasfilm leadership — including Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan — could potentially revisit the concept in the future. There’s also talk that major leadership shifts at Disney and Lucasfilm may open a new window for previously cancelled projects.

At the moment, though, nothing is confirmed.
The film remains one of those intriguing “what if” Star Wars stories: a fully imagined continuation of Ben Solo’s journey that never made it to screens.

A Missed Opportunity for the Sequel Era

For many fans, the idea of revisiting Ben Solo has always been compelling. His redemption arc in The Rise of Skywalker left lingering questions about his fate and potential future stories.

Now we know there was once a serious effort to answer those questions on the big screen — led by a high-profile director and the actor who brought the character to life.

Whether The Hunt for Ben Solo ever returns to development remains uncertain. But if it does, there’s clearly unfinished business waiting in a galaxy far, far away.
