Star Wars: Galactic Contention Relaunches July 31, and Battlefront Fans Should Pay Attention

o, Star Wars: Galactic Contention is not a new official Star Wars game.

But it may still be one of the most interesting Star Wars gaming things happening this month.

Galactic Contention is a fan-made total conversion mod for Squad, the large-scale tactical military shooter. Instead of modern combat, it turns the game into a Clone Wars battlefield with clone troopers, battle droids, vehicles, objectives, squad coordination, and a lot of blaster fire.

The mod’s Steam Workshop page currently lists it as “COMING JULY 31ST 2026”, with Galactic Contention described as a total conversion mod for Squad set during the Clone Wars.

This Is Battlefront Energy, But More Tactical

The obvious comparison is Star Wars Battlefront.

Not because Galactic Contention is exactly the same kind of game. It is not built around fast arcade chaos, hero characters, or quick casual matches.

It is built on Squad, which means the focus is more tactical.

Bigger maps.

Squad communication.

Objectives.

Vehicles.

Frontlines that actually feel like frontlines.

You are not the Jedi saving the war. You are one clone, droid, or soldier in a much larger fight, trying to survive long enough for someone’s plan to work.

That is the appeal.

Why July 31 Matters

The big news is the Unreal Engine 5 relaunch.

The Galactic Contention team has been preparing the mod’s return for the newer version of Squad, and community posts around the project point to July 31, 2026 as the relaunch date. The official subreddit also shared a Galactic Contention Unreal Engine 5 reveal post showing the project’s comeback.

That is not a small update.

Big mods do not survive engine shifts by accident. Maps break. Vehicles break. Assets break. Someone has to rebuild, test, fix, and probably argue with a battle droid animation at 3 a.m.

If the relaunch lands well, Galactic Contention could quickly become one of the most exciting active Star Wars fan projects again.

Why Star Wars Fans Should Care

There is still a huge appetite for large-scale Star Wars combat.

Troopers.

Vehicles.

Objectives.

Chaos.

The feeling of being part of a battle instead of the one celebrity hero solving everything.

Official Star Wars games have gone in many directions lately, from open-world adventures and strategy projects to remakes, card games, and racing revivals. But that classic battlefield fantasy still hits hard.

Our complete list of every Star Wars game ever made shows how often Star Wars has tried to turn galactic war into playable action. Galactic Contention fits into that tradition, even if it comes from the modding community rather than Lucasfilm Games.

And that is part of what makes it interesting.

Fan projects often fill the gaps official releases leave behind.

Not Official, Still Worth Watching

To play Star Wars: Galactic Contention, you need Squad on Steam. The mod itself is handled through the Steam Workshop.

So again: this is not an official Star Wars game.

But it is still worth watching.

A fan-made Clone Wars tactical shooter returning in Unreal Engine 5 is exactly the kind of thing Star Wars gaming fans should have on their radar.

Star Wars: Galactic Contention relaunches July 31.

If it works, Battlefront fans may suddenly have a very good reason to reinstall Squad.
