How Awesome Would it be if SWTOR Goes F2P?

There have been rumors about it from the start and some experts even predicted that SWTOR might be the last pay-to-play MMORPG. Now that they are offering a free 15 levels of play and have hinted at the possibility of microtransactions, there is a new rumor on the scene- will SWTOR go free to play?

Thanks to a story from UK magazine GamesTM, the rumor mill is abuzz again. In the article, BioWare’s associate lead designer, Emmanuel Lusinchi said:

“The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well,” he says. “Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.”

So this has players wondering if they are going to switch to a F2P model in the future. But really, it’s too soon to tell. This article really only said that they were considering the possibility- not that it was going to happen. And why wouldn’t they be considering it? With all the time, money and other investments that have gone into SWTOR, it only makes sense that they would consider any and all options to keep it going and keep the game alive.

There are actually some really cool reasons why we would love for SWTOR to go F2P:

  • Who doesn’t want to save money? Free is always cool.
  • The playerbase would grow with a free game
  • Microtransactions
  • Allow you to have more money to invest in other games and still play SWTOR
  • Allow you to take breaks and come back without worrying about wasting money on subscriptions
  • It would bring back more people who quit the game before

While free to play games used to mean crappy games, this is no longer the case. More great games are going f2p to keep their numbers up and others are launching f2p straight from the developers in an attempt to gain more players and also to compete it a very competitive arena.

Why do you think SWTOR should go F2P?
