Year on year the Esports industry seemingly grows every year, whether that’s with larger numbers of viewers, bigger prize pools, or even as far as more well known names entering the scene with sponsorships and investment into teams etc. So that begs the question? Why is it so popular and why is it continuing to rise in popularity? Well, there’s only one way to find out, right? Well, the short answer is kinda grim but here we go, the older generation is dying out and the younger generation coming through is replacing them. The younger generation is massively into video games of course, while the older generations who may have grown alongside video games, may not be as into them, or simply can’t play anymore. When it comes to watching anything competitive, it feels like the older generation always defaults to traditional sports however, which I feel was shown when…

BOSSK: SCOREKEEPER – A Star Wars Fan Film

Hello everyone! Stopping by today to bring you another interesting Star Wars fan film. It has a dark and gritty feel to it, the story kept me engaged, the acting was great, and I laughed so much when the Doctor was introduced. About 7 minutes in, I was screaming “Yesss!” at my screen. This film is inspired and pays homage to Predator (1987) while taking us into a tale told through a Star Wars perspective. I’m a Predator fan so I really enjoyed that angle. Makes me want to go back and watch the original Predator again. It’s just a bit over 16 minutes long so it’s perfect to watch while you’re having a quick lunch break or snack. It’s the Star Wars/ Predator mashup I didn’t know I needed. But now I am so very, very grateful for it! If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it here: So,…

Systems Designer on Star Wars: The Old Republic Bryant Wood wrote up an article on the games system design. Systems Design on SWTOR is the connective tissue between the amazing parts of the game. We develop what are known as game loops. You can think of game loops as repeating tours through parts of the game; like a Daily Area, your Weekly Conquest, or the path to item rating 306. These loops allow players to create and complete goals, engage and interact with other members of the community, and experience the cool things the team has made! The Systems team works to ensure invested effort and time surrounding the player experience are appropriately balanced. A key component of these loops are goals. When you log into SWTOR, there is something that players are hoping to accomplish. For some players it’s to experience an epic story, with them at the center. Others…

The Medieval Histories That Inspired the Jedi

When George Lucas described a Jedi Knight as ‘a Buddhist monk who happened to be very good at fighting’, he was referring to the deep esoteric philosophy of Light and Dark, suffering and selflessness that characterised the Jedi Order. These themes would have been intimately familiar to the orders of Knights in Medieval Western Europe – here, we’ll chart the intertwined histories of Jedi and medieval chivalric knighthood, and see how understanding the past can help shed light on the Star Wars universe. Lightsabers and Swords The most obvious comparison with the medieval era is that, put simply, the Jedi have medieval swords. The Jedi lightsaber is a rare and mythic weapon that surpasses all others in sharpness, and the possession of which marks the wielder out as a hero. The concept of the sword-wielding hero fighting against the forces of darkness is an extremely ancient one, but it finds…
