A fresh report is putting Disney and Epic Games back in the spotlight. According to the summary of comments made by journalist Alex Heath on The Town with Matt Belloni, Heath said he knows “for a fact” that some senior Disney executives want the company to buy Epic Games, while others inside Disney think that would be a bad idea. That is not the same thing as a deal being in motion, but it is a much stronger signal than the usual vague merger chatter.
That distinction matters. There is no official announcement that Epic is for sale, and Disney has not said it plans to acquire the company. Right now, this is still best understood as a report about internal interest and debate, not an active takeover.
Why Disney buying Epic Games would not come out of nowhere
This rumor lands because Disney and Epic are already deeply connected. In February 2024, Disney officially announced a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games and said the two companies would build a new “games and entertainment universe” connected to Fortnite. Disney also said that project would include major franchises like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and Avatar.
That makes this more than random boardroom fantasy. Disney has already told investors and fans that it sees Epic as a serious long-term partner, not just the company behind another licensed crossover. The official announcement described the partnership as Disney’s “biggest entry ever into the world of games,” which tells you how large the company already thinks this opportunity could be.
What this could mean for Star Wars
For Star Wars, this is where the story gets especially interesting. Disney’s official Epic announcement specifically included Star Wars among the brands expected to live inside that larger Fortnite-connected universe. That means any deeper Disney move around Epic would immediately matter for how Star Wars shows up in games, live events, creator tools, virtual spaces, and whatever this bigger interactive ecosystem eventually becomes.
In plain English: if Disney ever moved from partner to owner, Star Wars would likely become an even more central piece of that strategy. Fortnite has already become a major stage for Star Wars reveals, cosmetics, themed seasons, and fan-made experiences. Full ownership of Epic would give Disney much tighter control over the platform technology, the ecosystem, and the long-term direction of that relationship. That is a huge strategic shift — at least in theory.
The biggest catch: this is still only a rumor
That last part is important. Heath’s comments, as reported by GameSpot, suggest internal appetite at Disney, not an imminent acquisition. Epic is still founder-controlled, and GameSpot notes that Tim Sweeney retains full voting stock control, which means any sale would depend heavily on Epic’s own willingness to do it.
So yes, this is a real rumor with real logic behind it. But it is still a rumor. For now, the bigger confirmed story is that Disney and Epic are already building something substantial together — and Star Wars is part of that plan. If the relationship ever grows into something bigger, this quote may end up looking a lot less speculative in hindsight.
