Currency, like religion, is a keystone element of any empire but one frequently overlooked in fantasy and science fiction; after all, slapping a new name on a gold coin is the perfect foil to spending hours working out the macro economics of something truly unique. Star Wars got it right, building its universe around the Galactic Credit Standard, a card-based digital currency forged on the Sojourn moon, and one whose value is at the mercy of war. Galactic Economy Of course, there are plenty of other currencies in the Star Wars universe, Drallish crowns and the Tatooine druggat to name just two, with many of them arising as a reaction to the Clone Wars and the Battle of Endor. In the former case, a lack of trust in the Credit created tens of different currencies; in that, the post-Endor galactic economy has parallels with real-world “cryptocurrency” like Bitcoin, a type…

Star Wars: Battlefront to Become Massive eSports Title?
With the first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive challenging League of Legends as the most watched competitive eSport title, there appears to be huge scope to develop Star Wars: Battlefront to be a massive eSport box office draw. There are a diverse group of games that have made the transition to becoming super successful eSports games, but generally, there are a few criteria that although not guaranteeing success, certainly make it more feasible. Here’s our breakdown of why Battlefront is (or should be) destined to become an eSports hit. Community The first thing you need is a strong community and no one will doubt that Star Wars has a massive community of fans. The release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has ensured that a new generation of fans have been added and the community has increased dramatically. Although not every fan is a gamer,…

Should Star Wars Expand its Gaming Horizons?
Star Wars has enjoyed a revitalisation to their franchise with the launch of a new series of films, beginning in 2015 with The Force Awakens. The trend continued with Rogue One which was released at the end of last year, with both movies enjoying great success at the box office with the latter surpassing the $800m mark following its release before Christmas. One of the most prominent avenues of the series’ success has been the fruitful transition of the franchise on to several gaming platforms. Beginning with the Empire Strikes Back on Atari in 1982, two years following the release of the film, the series has gone from strength to strength, and has even spawned several spin-offs in all formats, including shoot ‘em-ups, RPG and action-adventure. Where’s the Star Wars Slot Game? However, for all the success the series has enjoyed across multiple platforms, one area it has not strayed…
BioWare Interview and SWTOR Knights of the Eternal Throne
We’ve been seeing some changes to SWTOR, especially since last year when the developers shifted the focus of the game. They decided to boost the single-player aspects of the game and while there were some players who leaned more toward the MMORPG aspect who didn’t like this, there are many more who love the story and the single-player elements. In short, they’re doing what works for them and many fans and Knights of the Fallen Empire was a clear example of that. But now we have SWTOR Knights of the Eternal Throne. Is the focus still on single-player elements? Why can’t a game be both great for single player and great for multi-player? Long time World of Warcraft players will attest that game got it right. There’s something for everyone and you don’t need to invest any time in multiplayer aspects of the game if it’s not your thing, but still…

5 Questions About Rogue One
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out next month! Now that we’ve passed Halloween and flipped our calendars to November, we can officially say that. For the second year running, a brand-new Star Wars movie is headed our way in December, and it’s safe to say that fans of the franchise are eagerly anticipating the release. And the latest trailer showed off broad, beautiful glimpses of a film that looks like far more than some flimsy side project. This should definitely be thought of as a full-fledged Star Wars movie, even if it’s not part of the core series. And if that’s the case, we all have some questions! It would take many, many pages to cover some of the speculation going on about what Rogue One will bring us and what it will mean for the greater Star Wars universe. But to sum up some fun speculation, here…
Carrie Fisher Says Trump Has “Coke Sniff”
If you watched the US Presidential debate last night, or the first presidential debate, you may have noticed that Republican nominee, Donald J. Trump, had a bit of a sniffling problem. Even if you didn’t see it for yourself, you may have seen social media, especially Twitter, having a ball laughing and speculating over it. This is something many onlookers took note of with the first debate. Trump’s sniffles were a big topic of conversation after the first debate on September 26, and the sniffles returned for the second debate leading someone to ask Fisher about it via Twitter. Fisher was asked through social media during the debate Sunday night if Trump was a “coke head” and her answer isn’t really all that surprising. “I’m an expert & ABSOLUTELY,” the Star Wars actress responded on her verified Twitter account. @reimamy I’m an expert & ABSOLUTELY — Carrie Fisher (@carrieffisher) October 10,…

I Could Have Been in the Next Star Wars Movie
Oh, fate, why are you such a cruel mistress? Okay, maybe I’m being a little dramatic but here is some cool (and disappointing to me personally) news I learned from my sister via Facebook. The next Star Wars movie will have parts filmed near Temple, Texas. This is a place I moved from just last year after being there for more than a decade. I could have had my chance to be an extra in an epic Star Wars film but no… they had to wait until I moved away. Now I live in the New York City area where you’d think I’d be in a better position for rubbing elbows with movie stars but anyone who’s ever been to Central Texas can tell you that part of the country definitely looks like it could be another planet. (I kid, I kid). Honestly, it’s a good location and it would…
Fan Film: WAY TO THE REBELLION
Here’s a great story from Wong Fu Productions, a personal favorite of mine. In this fan film, Way to the Rebellion, we get the story of two seemingly unlikely heroes who get caught up in the battle between the Empire and the Rebellion. I won’t ruin the plot for you because really, this is a fantastic story. The acting is fluid and natural, the props and costumes are great, the filming and cinematography is professional-grade and the music is awesome too. All around, it’s just a great fan film. It hits all the check marks you want to see from a film like this. The story is intriguing and will leave you wanting more. The Empire is expanding. Now these heroes will join the fight. SWTOR Follow Up Analysis from EA’s FY16 Report
EA’s Annual Report in the form of its Form 10-K filed with the SEC this week talks a bit about SWTOR. Where does it stand now? Is it gaining more attention? swtoreconomics had some opinions to share on the matter and we think you’ll find it interesting too: “Star Wars: The Old Republic has received a lot of attention for its episodic story content cycle that began in October 2015 with the release of Knights of the Fallen Empire and opinions vary widely. There is little doubt that the financial success or failure of this content cycle will be the largest factor in determining the future path of the game. There is one paragraph that provides essentially all of the information in the entire 97 page report regarding Star Wars: The Old Republic specifically: For fiscal year 2016, service and other revenue was $1,899 million, primarily driven by FIFA Ultimate Team and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Service and other revenue for fiscal year 2016…

Differences Between The Light and Dark Side of the Force
How much do you really know about the differences between the Light side and Dark side of the Force? We know that the Sith and the Jedi are two opposite ends of the spectrum and that it is important to keep balance within the Force. Still, how much do you really know about the two and the differences in the two? While there are small things like the colors of lightsabers, there are many more, deeper differences between the two sides. Also not surprisingly, there are similarities. After all, the Force is made up of both the Light and the Dark side. You can’t have the Force without both sides and this is a very important part of understanding the sides. The video is just under 8 minutes long so of course, it doesn’t mention every single thing that makes the Sith and Jedi different but it does hit on…
Has the Time Finally Come for a SW Themed Mobile Slot Machine?
As Lisa put it, games of chance have a major role to play in the Star Wars universe, even if they are not explicitly shown anywhere. Who knows, maybe Lucas – and now Disney – didn’t want to risk to be rated anything but G, or PG, which is almost the same. But we all know that Han Solo won the Millenium Falcon in a game of Corellian Spike, which is a variant of the universe’s most popular game of chance, sabacc. The only direct reference to gambling – betting, and a bit of dice – was in Episode I, when Qui-Gon won the cash needed for the parts, and the slave boy Anakin, in a bet on the pod races. And it was a major source of suspense, I must say. With gambling playing such an important part in the Star Wars universe, I wonder when the first SW-themed…
Disney: Make a Movie/Series about the 501st Legion
I love the 501st. Their enthusiasm and dedication to Star Wars is like nothing else. I’ve you’ve seen or met them in person, you know just what I mean. In fact, these days when I think of Star Wars, or Star Wars fans, the 501st definitely rank up there with things that come to mind. I know I’m not the only one to feel that way but a recent petition on Change.org shows us another fan has a great idea. What if Disney made a movie or series about the 501st? This petition explains it all: The 501st Legion is one of the most recognized military units in modern history, more so than the “Band of Brothers” 506th PIR, 101st Airborne of WW2, more so than the elite US Navy SEAL Team 6. The 501st has quite literally developed a near “cult following.” With costumes worn by both children and…
Weapon Tunings Q&A in SWTOR
Cartel Market Producer Dan Bunten has posted some Q&A in response to yesterday’s blog post on the new weapon tuning feature coming with Patch 4.4 Hey folks, We have seen a lot of questions come up about Weapon Tuning and I wanted to address some of the bigger ones we keep seeing. Is Weapon Tuning purely cosmetic? Yes, they do not affect the stats of the weapon in any way. Will we be able to modify existing weapons? Many of the existing weapons you have will support the Weapon Tuning slot, but not all. We will continue adding them to existing weapons over time and all new weapons introduced will have this slot. Are they exclusive to the Cartel Market? The Lightning Weapon Tuning is exclusive to the Cartel Market, but there may be future Tunings available from other sources. Are they affected by Color Crystals? Yes. Will Tuning effects stack…
BW Austin is Doing Animation Work for SWTOR
This fun tweet from Paul Marino, Lead Narrative Designer at BioWare Austin lets us all know they are doing some new work for the game. This lines up with the voice acting tweets we saw not too long ago as well so we can be sure some new content is in the works. What exactly they are working on is still uncertain, although many fans have speculated. Animation team & I are off out to EA Burnaby/The Capture Lab to grab some mocap for #SWTOR! Canada here we come! — Paul Marino™ (@PaulMarino) March 16, 2016 And that’s not all. Charles Boyd, lead designer of SWTOR, also had a tweet to share: @SortaRevan @nikkoliferous Not confirming anything, but we just happened to have Saresh in the booth today, actually 🙂 — Charles Boyd (@Charles_Boyd) March 16, 2016 Could it be season 2, new OPS, new combat animations? New class skill animations?…
