Legacy Promotion Expanded-One More Chance for a Free Month

BioWare is listening to its players and after their initial Legacy promotion, feedback from the community told them that many were not happy with the free 30-day subscription only being given to level 50s. Some players have been playing since launch and don’t quite have a 50 yet. Most of them are probably those who suffer from alt-it-is. I can completely understand since I love to make one of everything and check it out. Well Bioware has an answer to those players: Hello everyone! At BioWare we’re always listening to our fans and we’ve heard our community’s comments around players with Level 50 characters being the only group awarded 30 days of play time. We appreciate the feedback and are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Legacy Promotion, also awarding 30 days of play time at no charge to players that have reached Legacy Level 6 (who may…

Force Junkies Interview Emmanuel Lusinchi – PAX East

Emmanuel Lusinchi the Technical Design Director of Star Wars: The Old Republic also had a lot to say at PAX East 2012 and Force Junkies have published their interview for all of us to see. Here’s a snippet of their chat with Lusinchi: Do you coordinate your gear based on armor type? It’s based on color sets that we created intitially. Every piece of gear belongs to a set. And what happens, when you coordinate [your gear color] we’re actually going to read the color from that set and apply it to that gear. Let’s say you have a set of gear, and your chest is blue and you coordinate the rest of your gear, the rest of your gear is going to use the data from the blue chest piece? Yes, exactly. The fact that you can disable it per slot is important because if something doesn’t work you might…

New Online SWTOR Encounter Analyzer/ Log Parser

With 1.2 comes stats information (available to the user only) and it doesn’t take log at all before someone would create a parser to help us analyze our data from SWTOR. Now we have Encounter Analyzer which even allows you to share your data with other players. This could be essential to guilds looking to do content together or for recruiting new members based on their abilities.  This log parser has many great features and has been upgraded. The clock has even been set to milliseconds for date stamping so you know all times are dead-on now.  You can view either damage or threat in the breakdown on the analyzer. There are also three damage ability breakdowns in three different forms. The first form is a pie chart that allows you to quickly view the damage or threat damage ability breakdown.  If you hold your mouse over each section of…

Community Q& A, April 6th 2012

I just love the weekly community Q & A session SWOTR.com because I learn so much from what other players think of the game.  It was also pleasing to find that the questions are more in tune with the current game play instead of based on upcoming software. The team at SWOTR.com offered: “As a reminder, two weeks ago we suggested a shift in focus in your questions. As development plans are always subject to change, questions about future features will often get vague answers which can be repetitive and sometimes annoying.  With that in mind, the development team is more interested in questions about current in-game features or systems, or questions about why development decisions were made.” There were some really great questions this week and I was able to see some of my concerns answered as well.  Here are some of the best questions from the night: “Giolon:…

Interview: Gabe Amatangelo on PvP & Operations

Darth Hater interviewed Gabe Amatangelo on PvP & Operations and as usual, he had some interesting things to say. It is well worth the read if you haven’t already. Thanks Darth Hater! Why did you choose a quasi-Domination objective for the new Warzone? Gabe Amatangelo: Huttball comes at a close second, but overall Domination is the most popular one. Obviously we’re really proud and excited about Huttball being a close second because it is a new take on an existing type of mode. How does Novare Coast differ? I mean, how does Domination differ from game to game? Level design has something to do with it. I’m sure people that are on the PTS already know the specifics of mechanics. It is a majority one, so you have to have two out of three to at least start accruing some points or doing some damage to the enemy base. Also,…

Rakata and Battlemaster itemization changes reverted on the PTS

Now Rakata and Battlemaster itemization changes are reverted on the PTS and you keep the extra expertise. This post on explains: I was working on some PvE stat comparisons last night and found something odd: the rakata set on the PTS and live were giving me identical stats. At first I thought it was just a glitch but then I went and double checked both Rakata and Battlemaster on Live and PTS. The re-itemization they were doing on the PTS got reverted back but you keep the extra expertise on the Battlemaster. Not sure if it is a mistake or intended but I didn’t see much on the patch notes about it. Here is an image to illustrate what I am talking about.. http://i.imgur.com/nxR8O.jpg For those who don’t know the background story. When 1.2 came out on the PTS, many players saw their Rakata and Battlemaster stats changed – both…

Live the Ship Droid Experience! New SWTOR Minigame

You thought BioWare had already given you just about everything you could do in a game but there was one more thing we were missing- BioWare posts: Cruising around the galaxy in your own personal starship is an important aspect of Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. The player’s starship is like a home, and the player’s companions are like a family. No one knows this better than the dedicated Ship Droids who maintain the vessels: C2-N2 for Republic characters and 2V-R8 for Imperial characters. Jedi Knights, Smugglers, Bounty Hunters and the other class characters may be the heroes in the wider galaxy, but on board the starship, the Ship Droids are the heroes. That’s why, as part of Game Update 1.2, you will soon be able to assume direct control over your Droid’s actions with Ship Droid™, a brand new mini-game coming to The Old Republic! Features of this mini-game…

We’ve been writing about this a lot lately and trying to bring you all the news and coverage we can find since Guild Summit but the dev team has brought us all a very informative blog post covering the Legacy System. It’s a must-read, even if you don’t normally follow all of the dev posts. “Where would you start if you were constructing the Skywalker family tree? Let’s start with Anakin. If you ask me, Anakin is a level 50 Sith Warrior anchoring the top of the family tree. He’s married…

Mr. Robot Gives Away Free Digital Copies of Your Character

Mr. Robot has just launched their character API so players working on SWTOR tools or spreadsheets can import character information from the site, including character information, all of their gear, datacrons, skill tree points, and more. Mr. Robot says “We believe that opening this information up to other developers will mean more cool tools for all of us to use” and we couldn’t agree more. More info from Mr. Robot: See an example character, Zoopercat The Simulationcraft project is already working on some uses for it, as well as some of the guys over at SithWarrior.com. And that means, you can use those characters with our API to import into any tools or spreadsheets you’re using. You…

Community Q&A: March 23rd 2012

It’s that time again- time of the week for the Community Q&A. Here are some updates on yesterday’s questions and the answers from BioWare Community. Mksaccount: Are there any plans on adjusting rage timers in hard mode Flashpoints? Gabe Amatangelo (Lead Endgame & PvP Designer): The team continues to tune Flashpoint bosses based on metrics and feedback. Bosses that are a ‘spike’ in the progression curve (e.g. when a second boss might be more difficult than the last) are being addressed in one way or another, be it increasing their enrage timer, decreasing their health, extending the cooldown of control abilities, etc.   Bendog: Are there any plans to make the lower level planet commendations ‘Bind to Account’? It would be nice to hand them off to another character. Damion Schubert (Principal Lead Systems Designer): We’ve talked about it, sure. It’s something we considered as we added in the Legacy…

Raising Affection Tip: How to Get Rid of 30 Sec Timer

Are you looking to max out affection with your companions? Have a companion or two that is not full on affection yet? If you’re looking for a way to gain that affection more quickly, here’s how you can get rid of the 30 second timer when giving gifts. Zdlite posts: “Dunno if this is common knowledge yet, but i thought i’d drop this gem. When giving companions gifts espec when you first start (cause you can buy a gang of rank 5 greens from vendor, across form GTN). You can negate the 30 sec wait time, with a loading screen. I use the first instance zone, stand outside hand gift, run in hand gift, lather, rinse, repeat. My load time is usually under 10 secs, plus it’ll also cycle crewskill missions for ya =)” Is it an exploit? Here’s the big question that people have before using this trick. Will…

SWTOR Guild Summit RP, Guilds, UI, and All the Rest

Another interesting part of the Summit was panels on Roleplaying, Guilds and the UI changes. We concluded with the “all the rest” section that was whatever hadn’t already been covered in another panel. More than 18,000 people were watching along by the end of the livestream and some livestream questions were also asked in the Q&A session. RP discussion Legacy features: RP emotes, family tree, social unlocks, alignment unlocks Chat bubbles – we had a performance issue so we had to remove it previously. More orange gear with viability at end-game – wear what you want, wherever you want Dynamic events: NOT TALKING ABOUT IT – serverwide limited time events Improving spawning techs – NPCs that you can’t click on – they will increase or decrease depending on your system – we will populated the more empty areas. More ambient creatures Legacy: how does it affect roleplayers? What you like…

SWTOR Guild Summit Legacy Presentation

The Legacy Presentation was one of the most important parts of the Guild Summit. This is because we learned that what is currently just a pretty bar was actually intended to be the very lifeforce of the entire game! The Legacy System will be intertwined in everything else that happens in the game. It will affect each system of the game and the wait is almost over! The devs explain that they were sad to have to launch SWTOR without the fully working Legacy System in place but they had to pull it back to get the finishing touches on it. Now it’s finally nearing completion and ready for us all to experience. It’s a labor of love and they are hoping we will love it! Here are the highlights of what the full Legacy System will bring us: Family tree: decide your allies, kids, wives/husbands – its super cool…

SWTOR Guild Summit 2012 Operations/Flashpoints Discussion

For those who enjoy PvE, the Operations/Flashpoints discussion was one of the most interesting. 38% of level 50 players have played in an operation We know there are lots of bugs – particularly in Eternity Vault With game testing and feedback, things go a lot smoother Looting system in normal needs improvements – we wanted to make it PuG-friendly so you don’t have to yield to masterloot – we will deviate from this a bit in the next update. Another thing we want to do is allow you to trade destined loot. Existing operations are pretty easy – we want Hardmodes and Nightmare to be more challenging than they are right now. Explosive conflict: harder than current operations. Needs a whole new level of coordinate rather than more gear and more stats. We want to focus on coordination and execution. Takes place on Denova, it will be tier 2 raid…

Guild Summit 2012 PvP Discussion and Overview

One of the most exciting portions of the guild summit for many players was the talk of PvP.   Here is an overview of the discussion as well as the follow-up Q&A. Player vs. Player Discussion medal system- not balanced across classes right now. No specific queues for warzones Novare Coast: majority control objective – 3 point objective. You need least 2 out of 3 to do damage to fortification. Character warzone ratings for both solo and group player New warzone dailies – based on medal system as opposed to wins. We didn’t finish all the medals – we are introducing a lot more medals for objectives, catching a ball, scoring in huttball, be the first to plant a bomb 18 new medals “We want to discourage medal farming” – medal rewards are capped. We are doubling the amount of medals but cap it at ~8. If you finish a…

Interview: Gabe Amatangelo, Lead PvP Designer BioWare

As part of the local launch festivities, the guys over at TOROZ had some time to talk with Gabe Amatangelo, SWTOR’s Lead PvP designer. The Oceanic community had a lot of questions and they were able to get most of them asked in the time they had with Gabe. There were some things of interest to all of us in this interview. For example, there will new PvP changes and additions, the introduction of ranked PvP, UI changes (everyone has been asking for) and much more. See below for the official video of the interview. Thanks to TorBoard for the giving us the notes because the video is a bit difficult to hear: Gear/Warzone/Commendation Changes Lesser end-game commendations (Champion, Centurion, etc.) will not be exchangable. There will be two levels of warzones. Regular and Ranked warzones. Regular warzones will give out regular WZ commendations, and Ranked warzones will give out ranked…

Community Q&A: Feb 24th 201

It’s time for the Community Q&A again and this week, some really interested questions were asked and answered by official staff of BioWare. It’s all laid out on the community blog but here’s a snippet of the questions: Chyp: Can we expect to see any animation/damage timing consistency changes between factions? Georg Zoeller (Principal Lead Combat Designer): Yes. The animation team has been working on a new set of animations for abilities like the Trooper’s Mortar Volley to provide closer matching of animation timings and improved combat responsiveness. We expect to roll these changes out with Game Update 1.2. Zennis: Has there been any discussion to streamlining the Space Port process? Perhaps allowing speeders in the Space Ports besides the Fleet? Brian Audette (Senior Designer): We’ve absolutely heard what the fans are saying and have been exploring options to address these issues. While we are still investigating allowing speeder use…

SWTOR PvP Healing Gripe: Long Player Names and Titles

There have been many gripes about SWTOR thus far and a lot of them I agree with. In some ways, it’s because the game is new and BioWare still needs to make some tweaks and changes for everything to roll out properly. In other ways, it’s just because gamers will forever complain about PvP until the end of time. It’s the nature of the beast. But some recent complaints I’ve heard about healing in PvP don’t make sense to me. I’ve read it on the forums and this user Darchseraph on Reddit posts: As a healer I find myself missing a lot of heals that result in people dying because I simply can’t click select my heal target. Yes, you can choose directly from Op screen, but sometimes there are multiple people getting low, but only 1 or 2 actively taking damage. I have to look at both screen and…

They have also openedup an officialthread for next week’s Q&A, which will stay open until 2pm CST onFebruary 21st (8pm GMT/9pm CET). So here’s a snippet of what this week’s Q&A covered: DarthBelkar:Can we look forward to server-wide special seasonal / short-term events? DanielErickson: Yes! Expect them to fit into the world andsetting, involve a fair bit of discovery, and offer special rewards that willbe there one day and then gone forever. And expect them soon. Incoming changes to ‘global cooldown’ UI

There has been a lot of talk recently about SWTOR global cooldown UI, the interface changes that were made as part of patch 1.1.2 as well as what players would like to see in the UI. Many players also had opinions and complaints about the look of the ‘global cooldown’ animations. So BioWare staff listened to these concerns and took them seriously. Now they have announced on the official SWTOR blog thatthere will be some incoming changes to the global cooldown UI. This announcement explains: OurUI team took this feedback to heart and worked up a solution which gives everyplayer a lot more choices in how cooldown animations are displayed. If you’rehappy with the way the game currently looks, you can ignore these changes – butwe think some of these preferences will be welcomed by many players. Currently, these new preferences are scheduled to be added to the game in patch…
